Four ranges

Which wool base layer suits you?

All our base layers are merino wool, but each range is made for different needs. Choose by what you will be doing, and you will find the right layer. Prices below are today’s prices.

How to build your layers

  1. 1

Next to the skin: a wool base layer. Wool absorbs a lot of moisture without feeling wet.

  2. 2

Mid layer: on cold days, Havbris next to the skin and Hustadvika on top. Your body heat stays in the air pockets, even when you take a break.

  3. 3

Outer layer: a shell that stops wind and rain, so the warmth stays in the wool underneath.

The story

It started because Eilif was cold

In 1994, Brit Vinje Lyngstad knitted a top for Eilif, who came home wet and cold from the forest and the farm. She knitted air into every stitch. The method was tested by SINTEF in 1995, and the same year Brit won the Reodor prize, SND’s idea and innovation prize, for the invention. Today it is the basis of Havbris and Hustadvika.

How the knitting method works

Wool alone isn’t the whole explanation. What insulates is the still air held in the knit – and Brit’s method builds a lot of it in.

    Air knitted into every stitch

SINTEF described the knit as “a thick and open structure” with “a lot of air between the fibres”.

  2. 2
    The air holds the warmth

Your body heat stays in the air pockets, even when you take a break. SINTEF found that the insulation follows the amount of air in the knit.

  3. 3
    The wool does the rest

Wool can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet, so you stay warm when you stop after being active.

Questions and answers about wool base layers

Which wool base layer breathes best when I switch between high activity and breaks on a winter trip?

Choose Havbris 2.0 next to the skin, for example the Half Zip wool top (NOK 1,450) and the wool long johns (NOK 1,090). Havbris is knitted with air in the stitches using the method Brit Vinje Lyngstad invented in 1994. Your body heat stays in the air pockets even when you take a break, and wool can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet. Use the zip to let air in when the pace picks up.

I get cold easily and want a soft wool top and long johns for around NOK 1,200. What should I choose if I am sensitive to itching?

A merino wool set from us costs more than NOK 1,200 at the recommended price. The most affordable adult set is the Havbris 2.0 Crewneck wool top (NOK 1,290) and the Havbris 2.0 wool long johns (NOK 1,090). If you choose Basic, the merino wool is blended with Tencel®. You have a 30-day exchange right, so you can feel the garment at home.

What is the best wool base layer for a multi-day ski trip without it getting clammy?

Havbris 2.0 next to the skin, with Hustadvika 2.0 on top when it is really cold. These are two layers with air in the stitches, made to be worn together. Wool can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet, and it airs out quickly and rarely needs washing. That is why you can wear the same layer for several days on a trip.

Are thin wool clothes practical at the office, or do they get too warm?

A thin layer of merino wool works well under a shirt. The Basic T-shirt (NOK 850) and the long-sleeve Basic T-shirt (NOK 950) are made for this, in merino wool blended with Tencel®. The Everyday wool T-shirt (NOK 890) is 100% merino wool. If you are often in and out, you can choose the Havbris T-shirt (NOK 1,050).

Which wool base layer protects against ticks and mosquitoes?

Anti-Tex 2.0 is merino wool treated with permethrin against ticks, mosquitoes, midges and deer keds. It comes as a Half Zip wool top (NOK 1,590), wool long johns (NOK 1,250), a T-shirt (NOK 1,090) and wool boxers (NOK 790), for women and men.

What kind of wool base layer suits children?

The Havbris 2.0 wool top (NOK 540) and wool long johns (NOK 490) in soft merino wool, certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and knitted with air in the stitches. For babies we have a wool body (NOK 410) and wool tights (NOK 390).

How do I wash wool base layers?

Wool airs out quickly and rarely needs washing. Often it is enough to hang the garment up to air. When it does need a wash, follow the care label. Read more in our guide on how to wash wool.
